The Flood and the Weakening of the Sacred House
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was about thirty-five years old, a strong flood struck Makkah. The water damaged the walls of the Kaaba, which had already been weakened earlier by a fire. The Quraysh realized that the sacred House of Allah could collapse if it was not rebuilt. They gathered to discuss the matter and agreed that the Kaaba must be reconstructed. But they made an important decision: only pure and lawful wealth would be used for this holy work. No money from interest, gambling, injustice, or unlawful earnings would be allowed.
The First Step Towards Reconstruction
At first, the Quraysh hesitated. They feared that bringing down the Kaaba might bring Allah’s punishment. Finally, Walid ibn al-Mughira, one of their leaders, took courage and began to demolish part of the wall. He said, “Allah does not destroy those who work for good.” When the people saw that no harm came to him, they also joined in. Together they brought the Kaaba down to the very foundations laid long ago by Prophet Ibrahim (A.S.).
Every tribe was given its own section of the Kaaba to rebuild. The noble Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself, along with his uncle Abbas (R.A.), carried stones on his shoulders. A Roman architect supervised the work to ensure the building was strong. Since the lawful money was not enough to rebuild the Kaaba fully on the old foundations, about six cubits were left outside on the northern side. To mark this area, a low wall was built, which is still known today as Hijr Ismail or Hateem.
The Dispute Over the Black Stone
When the walls were raised and it was time to place the sacred Black Stone (Hajar al-Aswad) in its position, a serious problem arose. Each tribal chief wanted the honor of lifting and placing the stone. The matter turned into a fierce dispute, lasting for several days.Anger grew so high that the situation almost led to bloodshed inside the holy sanctuary.
Then an elderly leader Abu Umayyah suggested a solution Let us agree that the first man who enters the gate of the Haram tomorrow morning will decide this matter.Everyone accepted his idea.
The Arrival of the Trustworthy
The next morning the first person to walk through the gate was none other than Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. The Quraysh upon seeing him shouted with joy Here comes Muhammad the Trustworthy We are pleased with him. They trusted him completely knowing that he had never spoken a lie and always judged with fairness.
The Wise Solution of the Prophet ﷺ
The Prophet ﷺ listened carefully to the problem and then proposed a brilliant solution. He asked for a large cloth to be brought. Placing the Black Stone in the middle of it, he invited each tribal chief to hold one edge of the cloth. Together, they lifted the sacred stone and carried it to its place. Then the Prophet ﷺ himself took the stone with his blessed hands and set it into the wall of the Kaaba.
This wise and fair decision ended the dispute. All the tribes were satisfied, and bloodshed was avoided. It was yet another proof of the wisdom and trustworthiness of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
The Character of the Prophet ﷺ
Even before Prophethood, Muhammad ﷺ was known for his noble character. He was pure in heart,
truthful in speech and gentle in manner. He never bowed before idols never drank wine and never joined in the corrupt practices of Makkah. He disliked injustice and cruelty and his heart was filled with mercy for the weak the poor the orphan and the widow.
People admired his honesty so much that they called him Al-Amin the Trustworthy. He carried the burdens of others
supported the needy honored his guests and spread kindness wherever he went. Allah was preparing him for the greatest mission to restore the true faith of Ibrahim (A.S.) and guide humanity to the worship of the One True God.
